Principal Mechanical Engineer Job Description Template
Our company is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team.
Responsibilities:
- Support and occasionally lead production, test and integration efforts of various programs at Space Park;
- Ability to design mechanical assemblies and parts;
- Provide high level engineering analysis using state of the art FEA and other applicable tools. Review, publish, and present results to management;
- Ability to assess thermal, dynamic, and material compatibility of design changes;
- Provide project leadership for all mechanical related design works. Establish schedules, budgets and resources and execute projects as planned;
- Thermal/ structural analysis: use of FEA, specifically ANSYS Workbench;
- Support and occasionally lead development of non-flight hardware;
- Ability to review mechanical fabrication drawings and perform tolerance analysis;
- Develop system level design strategies and lead design, development, testing & refinement of components and sub-systems with design team;
- Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methods and conventions in accordance with ASME 14.5-2009;
- Specification and design of electro-mechanical mechanisms and components;
- Knowledge of advanced electro-mechanical systems: servos, positioning systems, piezoelectric devices, position feedback devices;
- Support bid and proposal activities;
- Provides input to the vision, definition, and specification of future designs;
- Mentor teammates to build technical/professional capability.
Requirements:
- Ability to review mechanical fabrication drawings and perform tolerance analysis;
- Thermal/ structural analysis: use of FEA, specifically ANSYS Workbench;
- Ability to assess thermal, dynamic, and material compatibility of design changes;
- Current experience using 3D solid modeling tools (SolidWorks or equivalent) in conjunction with Design Analysis Tools (FEA, CFD & Moldflow);
- Possess expertise in the design of plastic components (injection molding) as well as the design of metal-formed components (sheet metal and machined);
- Ability to design mechanical assemblies and parts;
- Experienced with DFM and DFA design techniques, tolerance stack-up analysis, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing;
- Has knowledge of high-volume manufacturing processes;
- BS in Mechanical with a minimum of 15 years of experience working with large capital equipment. Master Degree level is preferred;
- Application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methods and conventions in accordance with ASME 14.5-2009;
- Support bid and proposal activities;

- Proven experience with managing major suppliers and sub-contractors;
