URGENT: Comptroller

Job Description Controller – Nonprofit Organization (Hybrid, Santa Ana, CA)

The organization is seeking an experienced Controller to lead its accounting and finance function, strengthen financial operations, and play a key role in an upcoming accounting system conversion. This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on both the organization's financial health and its mission.

Oversee all day-to-day accounting and finance operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll support, and cash management

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of two accounting professionals

Manage the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring accurate and timely financial statements

Serve as the primary liaison with the outside CPA firm, coordinating the annual financial audit, Form 990 preparation, and any Single Audit requirements

Play a lead role in the accounting system conversion, including requirements gathering, data migration, testing, process redesign, and staff training

Oversee grant and restricted fund accounting, ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and funder reporting requirements

Prepare budgets, forecasts, and variance analyses, and present financial results to executive leadership and the Board/Finance Committee

Develop, document, and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures

Monitor cash flow and support strategic financial planning

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred

• 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in a supervisory or management role
• Nonprofit accounting experience required, including fund accounting, grant accounting, and familiarity with ASC 958
• Experience working with external auditors and managing the audit process
• Hands-on experience with an accounting system implementation or conversion strongly preferred
• Advanced Excel skills; experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Blackbaud Financial Edge, Abila MIP) a plus
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to present financial information to non-financial stakeholders

Hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office days in Santa Ana and remote work.
