It is the mission of the CSUDH Police Department to provide a safe campus conducive to education for the university's students, faculty, staff, and visitors. We will accomplish our mission by encouraging community awareness and providing proactive service in a fair, sensitive, and professional manner in support of the university’s mission. The University Police Department will enforce all laws of the state of California and educate the community on safety and risk avoidance practices.

Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant, the Police Officer performs patrol duties of University property and grounds, by vehicle, foot, or bicycle to protect the campus property, facilitate, and visiting public against criminal activity; provides general information and assistance to the public; appears in court as necessary; and other law enforcement duties as assigned.

Shift work on a rotating 12-hour schedule. Frequent overtime due to court attendance and special details. Patrols, on foot or by vehicle, all parking lots, the perimeter of the facilities, and the campus interior to safeguard state property and visiting public from criminal activity.

Checks all doors, windows, and gates for security and makes necessary reports as to their condition.

Makes reports of all building and equipment malfunctions, unsafe conditions, fire hazards, and irregularities encountered on his tour of duty.

Performs duties with minimum supervision and uses independent judgment.

Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes reported and takes necessary action, within the limits of prescribed policies and procedures, to correct the situation, or if necessary, contacts the appropriate university authorities for guidance and assistance.

Makes arrests when required and appears as a witness in court.

Operates Police vehicles, computers, and standard-issued police equipment, including firearms.

Must have completed a Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) certified basic police academy.

High School diploma or equivalency with an overall score of 45 and a standard score of not less than 35 on any section of the test or have attained a score on a written test equivalent to that attained by the average high school graduate.

Special minimum qualifications for Police Officers:

Pass a medical examination, physical agility test, written examination, psychological examination, a background check requiring fingerprinting, and pass a drug test.

S. citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship prior to submitting an application for this position.

Not have a domestic violence felony conviction.

Be able to read and write at the level necessary to perform the job of a Police Officer as determined by job-related examinations.

Working knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures.

Assess law enforcement or other hazardous situation and determine the appropriate course of action.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with the campus community, general public, state and local public safety agencies, and others.

Certificate or Bachelor of Arts/Sciences degree

Experience as a full-time Police Officer with a basic P.Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or the continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.
