ASSISTANT PROSECUTING ATTORNEY I

Assistant United States Attorney (Criminal Division) The United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California is headquartered in Sacramento and serves the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This office has locations in Sacramento, Fresno, and Bakersfield.

The United States Attorney is seeking attorneys to serve as Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSA) in the Criminal Division.

Criminal Division units: Sacramento Office: White Collar Crime, Special Prosecution, Transnational Organized Crime, Violent Crime & Firearms Trafficking, National Security, and Appellate.

Fresno & Bakersfield Offices: White Collar Crime and Narcotics & Violent Crime.

Applicants may indicate unit preference in their cover letter. Depending on unit assignment, an AUSA will handle a variety of criminal cases including complex white collar, child exploitation, narcotics and violent crimes, immigration, and appellate. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as training and experience progress.

Required Qualifications J.D. Degree and active membership in good standing of any U.S. bar.

United States citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications At least 3–5 years of experience litigating cases with substantial responsibility for discovery, trial, and appeals.

Quick analytical ability and skill in articulating critical case issues.

Superior oral and written communication, research, interpersonal skills, and sound judgment.

Excellent courtroom skills and ability to work collaboratively with attorneys, paralegals, support staff, and client agencies.

Capacity to function in a highly demanding environment.

Applicants will be expected to conduct their own legal research and writing, be self‑sufficient in preparing day‑to‑day correspondence and pleadings, and demonstrate excellent computer literacy for internet research, electronic court filing, email, and word processing.

The ideal candidate will also have experience with multi‑agency task forces, federal grand jury practice, and investigative techniques such as electronic surveillance, tracking devices, search warrants, telephone toll record analysis, asset seizure and forfeiture; able to handle complex cases from the initial investigative stage through trial.

Compensation Pay is based on years of professional attorney experience. The recruiting range for AD‑21 through AD‑29 is:

Sacramento: $85,075–$197,100 (29.76% locality pay).

Fresno: $77,135–$180,986 (17.65% locality pay).

Bakersfield: $89,474–$197,100 (36.47% locality pay).

Other Information Travel will occasionally be required.

Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
