JOB ANALYSIS

Responsible for planning, developing, delivering and evaluating appropriate individualized educational services, learning programs and instruction for special needs students in both self-contained and integrated settings in consultation with other school personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Identify the needs of assigned students through formal and informal assessments. Review referral data, history and assessment data to develop appropriate goals and objectives for each student. Confer with general education teachers regarding the educational, social, emotional and physical needs and objectives of each student. Plan, develop and implement individualized learning plans for each student. Design appropriate teaching strategies. Prepare instructional materials and lesson plans according to Individual Educational Plans (IEPs). Review IEPs with parents, school administrators and general education teachers. Monitor, evaluate and document each student's progress utilizing appropriate measurements and assessment devices. Prepare timely progress reports for each student. Develop and implement necessary interventions and strategies to promote achievement of student objectives. Collaborate and consult with general school personnel regarding the implementation of the IEPs and special educational services. Modify and adapt conventional educational programs and curriculum to meet the requirements of special needs students. Maintain regular communication with parents by means of email, phone calls, conferences and progress reports. Assist parents with understanding and supporting educational objectives, learning expectations and behavioral standards. Ensure adherence to reasonable rules of classroom discipline and order to maintain a secure and effective learning environment. Manage student behavior through monitoring, supervising and assessing behavioral patterns. Utilize appropriate corrective methods to modify behavior. Develop and implement Behavioral Intervention Plans (BIPs) where necessary. Instruct students on socially acceptable behaviors and personal development skills. Prepare special needs students for inclusion and transition to mainstream. Maintain accurate and complete records in compliance with school district regulations and legal requirements. Maintain a current knowledge of special education best practices and trends. Knowledge of lockdown procedures, fire drills, emergency backpacks to insure a safe school environment.

History: Londonderry Middle School was initially constructed as a junior high school in 1982. In 1997/98, a large addition was built and adjoined to the school to accommodate sixth-grade students moving to a middle school philosophy in the Londonderry School District. Learning Environment: The school is organized into interdisciplinary, heterogeneous teams of up to approximately 125 students, each being taught by a team of teachers (English, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, Special Education, Health, Industrial Arts, Computer Education, and Art). Reading, World Language, Music, and Physical Education teachers are an essential adjunct to the team. The diverse talents, skills, learning styles, and interests of students at this age level lead to a variety of grouping patterns. Our math programs offer students the ability to enhance and meet the learning needs of those who demonstrate an aptitude for mathematics. All other classes remain heterogeneously grouped. Differentiated Instruction provides students of all abilities an educational experience that is challenging yet appropriate. The middle school continues to offer a time for students to receive the opportunity to get a personalized approach to instruction. Each day, the allotted time is called "Storm Time," which allows teachers to schedule a time to work with students individually and in small groups. In addition, the students can access a variety of offerings throughout the building using the Enriching Students selfscheduling tool. Londonderry Middle School Vision: The middle school has adopted a vision of Excellence "taking what we do well and striving for better." Three fundamental principles support this vision: Student Academic Growth, Instructional Refinement, and Collaborative Practices that create a rigorous and challenging curriculum with the appropriate educational supports that meet each student’s needs, interests, and abilities. Special Programs: The Middle School Acceleration Program has three major components: Math in Focus, Differentiated Instruction, and Advanced Studies. We offer high school courses for credit in the following: Honors Algebra 1, CP Algebra 1, CP Spanish 1, CP French 1, CP German 1 and Earth and Space. Foreign Language Program: High school level language courses, for high school credit, are offered to students in grade eight. Language choices consist of Spanish, German and French. In grade seven, students can take a six-week introduction to world languages course. Additionally, students will be exposed to cultural aspects of French and Spanish speaking countries. Special Curriculum: Advanced studies are unique to the Middle School and dovetail nicely into the existing middle school philosophy and physical structure. Music: Exploring music is for students to learn about music in a non-performing environment. This course is designed to enhance music appreciation by studying musical styles, music theory, and music history. Students involved in performing ensembles participate in school-sponsored concerts and festivals. Performance opportunities exist with: Chorus, Select Chorus, Introduction to Orchestral Strings, Band, Jazz Band, and Orchestra. We also offer music alternative packages which run on a trimester basis and include the following options: adventure class, super study skills math lab, exploring Spanish culture, and rhythm and melody. School Counselors: The Londonderry School District Counseling Program's mission, in cooperation with family, community, and school, advocates for and promotes the educational, personal, social, and career development of students. Counselors are trained and skilled in helping students confront and resolve difficulties or conflict. Special Education: The Special Education Department offers various services designed to meet individual students' specific needs with disabilities. Referrals to special education can be made through the Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS) Target Team, or by teachers, parents, school counselors, and others working with the student. Eligibility for Special Education is determined through a team process with a review of academic and functional achievement and cognitive profile measurements, classroom performance, teacher and parent input, and a determination of the need for specialized Instruction. If eligibility criteria are met, a case manager is assigned, an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) is developed, and the student's supports and services are implemented and monitored to ensure successful access to the general curriculum. The IEP team determines placement to provide programming in the least restrictive environment. LMS Library: The LMS Library provides a comprehensive collection of print and digital resources to support the curriculum, promote an appreciation of reading, and develop information literacy skills. Librarians collaborate with teachers to create projects that reinforce these necessary life skills to prepare them for high school and beyond. The library circulates various print and audiovisual resources for student, professional, and community use and provides access to laptops for in-library use. Technology Resources: The Information Technology Department strives to create an infrastructure that supports the curriculum and administrative objectives of the Londonderry School District, aiding all students and staff in research, communication, and learning. To do so, Londonderry School District's IT Department strives to maintain a network of updated, modern computer hardware running some of the latest software available on the market. LMS students will be issued a Chromebook prior to the start of each school year for their academic use in class and at home throughout the school year. This 1:1 device program will help students access resources, applications, and other resources for academic success. Physical Education: The goal of the Physical Education Department at Londonderry Middle School is to develop the whole individual. Activities include team, individual and dual sports, adventure activities, and fitness programs. Students participate in physical education classes for two consecutive days, every two days, for approximately 90 days a year.
