Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Neurosciences Step‑Down Unit will provide comprehensive, evidence‑based care to patients with acute stroke and general neurological conditions requiring intermediate (step‑down) level monitoring. The APP obtains relevant medical histories, performs detailed neurological and physical examinations, reviews and interprets diagnostic studies, develops differential diagnoses, and implements individualized treatment plans, including ordering tests and prescribing therapies consistent with departmental guidelines and privileging. Working closely with the stroke, general neurology, and neurocritical care teams, the APP coordinates care across the continuum to ensure timely escalation or transition of care as patient needs evolve. The APP maintains accurate documentation, incorporates hospital quality and safety initiatives, prioritizes workflow to support efficient patient throughput, and performs procedures within scope of practice. In addition, the APP provides education to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow‑up, and collaborates with physicians, trainees, nursing, and ancillary staff to support interdisciplinary learning and patient‑centered care while maintaining current knowledge of neurologic disease processes and emerging evidence in stroke and neurology. Preferred Experience: Strongly prefer inpatient Neurology or Hospitalist experience. Daytime coverage including rotating weekends. Responsibilities Clinical: Obtain relevant medical history, perform thorough physical assessment, review and interpret diagnostic tests, develop differential diagnoses, implement treatment plans, order evidence‑based pharmacologic agents consistent with departmental guidelines, schedule follow‑up, conduct preventive health screening, maintain comprehensive records, keep current knowledge of disease processes and specialty literature, synthesize data for diagnosis, revise plan of care, prioritize work, lead productivity initiatives, perform procedures per privileges. Education: Professionally educate clients and families on condition, treatment, follow‑up; collaborate with clinicians, staff, students; develop educational materials; provide instruction to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries; recognize self‑learning needs; attend educational programs. Leadership: Provide instruction to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries, students; precept, shadow, lecture, train, CME, rounds, staff meetings; participate in community/outreach programs; lead outreach; apply system knowledge to improve healthcare delivery; lead participation in system improvements. Professional: Interact respectfully and timely with patients, families, coworkers; respond to customer needs; accept responsibility for work outcomes; share workload responsibility with team. Quality/Research: Engage in daily continuous quality improvement, identify and implement process improvements, consult with management, lead interdisciplinary teams, initiate/revise protocols, influence policy, develop new clinical programs or services to improve patient care. Education and Licensure Completion of an accredited graduate‑level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program. Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider (NP, PA, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) in the state of North Carolina. Board certification if required by the Department; DEA number. Professional Experience No prior experience required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Demonstrated clinical competency. Effective leadership and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Strong written and verbal communication and analytical skills. Effective interaction to ensure successful patient care in clinical setting. Accurate medical record documentation for billing.
