Overview University Correctional Health Care (UCHC) is part of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, providing physical, mental health, dental, and specialized treatment services to individuals in the New Jersey criminal justice system. UCHC operates with a budget of $150 million and employs approximately 1,000 staff. Position Summary Full‑time Staff Nurse for Northern State Prison in Newark, NJ. The role uses the nursing process to provide ambulatory and direct nursing care to inmates across age groups in a correctional setting. Responsibilities Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of residents, including adolescents (13‑17), adults (18‑64), and their families. Perform assessments in various settings: initial intake, health unit for sick call, emergency situations, chronic care clinics, and infirmary. Collaborate with health care professionals, security officers, and other staff in the correctional environment. Identify inmate‑centered goals and nursing objectives and implement interventions to address identified problems. Plan nursing care based on resident assessment, making timely referrals and initiating care per institutional policies. When acting as charge nurse or team leader, delegate duties to team members based on skill set and guide the provision of care. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey. Certifications & Licenses State of New Jersey nursing license. CPR certification. Valid driver’s license; possession of own or alternative transportation between sites. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or equivalent. At least one year of experience in a correctional setting. Physical Demands & Work Environment Must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes. Capable of lifting and carrying an emergency treatment bag up to 45 pounds, and assisting with lifting/rotating patients up to 50 pounds. Work in a correctional environment requiring adherence to Department of Corrections (DOC) policies. Compensation and Benefits Minimum Salary: $37,230 per year. Mid‑Range Salary: $46,540 per year. Maximum Salary: $54,050 per year.
