Staff Nurse Mental Health Per Diem Multiple Vacancies UCHC NSP Overview University Correctional Health Care (UCHC), a part of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, seeks a per diem Mental Health Staff Nurse (RN) for the Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey. The role involves delivering ambulatory nursing care to adult and geriatric inmates, collaborating with healthcare and security personnel, and leading a team as assigned. Duties Provide direct and indirect nursing care to meet the physiological, psychosocial, and emotional needs of inmate patients, including adults (18–64 years) and geriatrics (65+). Apply psychiatric standards of nursing practice and classification of mental disorders to develop inmate treatment plans with specific goals and interventions tailored to each inmate’s needs. Implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore physical and mental health across all age groups. Evaluate inmate responses in collaboration with multidisciplinary care providers to ensure quality care. Perform additional duties related to maintaining a safe milieu, documented through specific paperwork and supervisory observation. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing with a license to practice in the State of New Jersey. Minimum of one (1) year of psychiatric nursing experience. Certifications & Licenses CPR Certification required. Valid driver’s license required. Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation between sites. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) or equivalent. Physical Demands First responders must be able to perform CPR for at least 10 minutes and physically lift and carry an emergency treatment bag of up to 45 pounds, as well as assist in lifting and rotating patients who cannot ambulate (up to 50 pounds). Employment Terms Per Diem, 19 hours per week, rotating shift; full onsite work arrangement; 12‑month staff appointment; PeopleSoft payroll designation. Salary $59.01 per hour.
