Registered Nurse Interventional Radiology

Job Summary:

The Interventional Radiology Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care for patients undergoing invasive interventional procedures such as angiography, embolization, and cardiac catheterization. This role involves collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. The nurse acts as a patient advocate, supervises assigned personnel, and performs multiple roles including circulator, scrub technologist, and monitor technologist during procedures. Critical responsibilities include medication administration, sterile technique maintenance, complication recognition, and patient monitoring. Responsibilities:

• Provide nursing care throughout interventional radiology/cardiology procedures including angiography and cardiac catheterization.
• Administer medications such as anticoagulants, vasoactive agents, contrast media, and emergency drugs as ordered.
• Maintain sterile technique and assist physicians during procedures as a scrub technologist.
• Monitor patients for moderate sedation, including vital signs, hemodynamics, oxygenation, and consciousness level.
• Recognize and respond rapidly to complications such as arrhythmias, bleeding, contrast reactions, strokes, and cardiac arrest.
• Collaborate with radiology technologists and physicians to manage contrast allergies and sensitivities.
• Perform hemodynamic and procedural monitoring, document procedural events, and operate monitoring equipment.
• Assist with patient preparation, positioning, and equipment setup prior to procedures.
• Verify patient identity, allergies, NPO status, and renal function; conduct procedure verification and timeout processes.
• Perform vascular access management and sheath removal as needed.
• Support department operations including managing supplies, restocking, inventory tracking, and room turnover.
• Ensure proper cleaning, charging, and storage of procedural devices and equipment.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Oregon.
• Graduate of an accredited professional nursing school.
• At least one year of experience in critical care, emergency, cath lab, or interventional radiology.
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
• Ability to provide care addressing age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial patient needs.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
• Three or more years of experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab.
• Conscious sedation training and monitor role experience.
• Certifications specific to clinical specialty such as RCIS or NIH Stroke Scale.
• IV certification.
• Bilingual abilities, especially English-Spanish speaking.

Special Considerations:

• May be required to be on call for the Interventional Unit as needed.
• Work involves fast-paced, high-acuity environments requiring rapid response to emergencies.
• Must maintain strict sterile technique and adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
• Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams is essential.

Scheduling:

• Shift assignments may vary and include on-call responsibilities.
• Work schedule is determined by unit needs and may include day, evening, or night shifts.
