RN Medical Surgical Nurse

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse (Med-Surg Nurse) provides professional nursing care to acutely ill, convalescing, and chronically ill patients, focusing on the overall care specific to patient age and diagnosis. The role includes patient assessment, medication administration, symptom monitoring, documentation, and patient/family education. The nurse collaborates closely with providers, charge nurses, and care teams to ensure quality care and responds promptly to changes in patient conditions. Supervisory duties over LPNs, CNAs, and nursing students are also part of the role. A minimum of 2 years of experience and strong clinical and communication skills are required. Responsibilities:

• Assess patients and perform patient care tailored to age and diagnosis standards.
• Communicate clinical changes and diagnostic results to providers, charge nurse, and care team members.
• Respond quickly and accurately to changes in patient condition or treatment response.
• Administer medications following the Five Medication Rights to minimize errors.
• Develop and evaluate patient teaching plans including family or caretakers as appropriate.
• Provide respectful, dignified, and empathetic interaction with patients, families, co-workers, and providers.
• Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs of patients and families.
• Apply knowledge of growth and development principles to provide age-appropriate care.
• Document patient care according to established standards and policies.
• Support orientation and training of new personnel and participate in in-services.
• Supervise licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing students.
• Perform general nursing duties across departments under supervision as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in the state of practice.
• Minimum of 2 years experience in hospital, home health, or hospice care.
• Strong clinical assessment, medication administration, and treatment planning skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience in medical-surgical nursing or related specialties such as ICU, ER, Psychiatric, Labor & Delivery, PACU, or Operating Room.
• Driver's license, car insurance, and automobile for field work (if applicable).
• Interdisciplinary team collaboration experience.

Special Considerations:

• May supervise licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing students.
• Must be able to address diverse psychosocial and cultural patient needs.
• Work may involve fast-paced hospital or clinical environments.

Scheduling:

• Work schedule and shifts are typically determined by facility needs; may include day, evening, or night shifts.
• Shift assignments may require flexibility to cover patient care demands.
