Principal Admitting Worker

Job Responsibilities This position functions as a Principal Admitting Worker (PAW) for Transfer Center activities and as a Patient Placement Coordinator for Patient Placement activities under the Transfer Center and Patient Placement Supervisor. Screen all incoming patient transfers to UCSF Medical Center, process transfer requests, admissions, and admission reconciliation for units. Confirm insurance eligibility and benefits, follow up on inpatient authorization, and secure authorizations. Counsel patients and families regarding their financial liability, secure deposits on self‑pay admissions, and collect patient liability portions for routine/elective admissions. Perform Transfer Center intake, registration information, and financial clearance. Manage patient class updates and assist with time‑sensitive issues related to patient flow requiring “Grand Central” knowledge and expertise in admission, transfer, and discharge systems. Serve as first point of contact for incoming requests for patient transfer and direct admits to UCSF Medical Center. Required Qualifications High school diploma with six years of related experience, or associate’s degree with four years of related experience. Proficiency in health insurance eligibility and authorization requirements. Proficiency in reimbursement financial policies. ADT experience required, knowledge of office machines, typing 30 wpm. Basic PC skills. Problem‑solving, data analysis, and recommendation skills. Ability to multitask, prioritize, and follow instructions in a fast‑paced environment. Strong customer‑service skills. Excellent verbal and written communication and grammar. Ability to work collaboratively with culturally diverse staff and patient/family populations. Independent work with minimal supervision. Will be working in San Francisco, CA. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual capability. Previous hospital experience. Basic knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of government program regulations such as MediCal, Medicare, MIA, CCS, and other third‑party payors.
