Job Description

The Senior Accounting Clerk performs a variety of routine and moderately complex accounting support functions in accordance with established accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls. This role is responsible for processing accounting transactions, maintaining accurate financial records, assisting with reconciliations and reporting activities, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. The Senior Accounting Clerk serves as an experienced resource within the department, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of accounting activities while escalating complex issues as appropriate.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

1. Performs routine accounting duties in accordance with established policies, procedures, and internal controls.

2. Executes accounting and financial transactions, including billing, vendor invoice processing, bank deposits, cash receipts, and related accounting activities.

3. Maintains accurate and complete accounting records, files, and supporting documentation.

4. Records, verifies, and processes accounting transactions accurately and within established timelines.

5. Performs account reconciliations and researches routine discrepancies to ensure accurate financial records.

6. Reviews transactions and supporting documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with departmental procedures.

7. Identifies discrepancies, errors, or missing information and escalates issues to the appropriate team member for resolution.

8. Assists with month-end and year-end close activities, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation.

9. Assists in preparing financial statements, management reports, reconciliations, and other accounting-related information.

10. Provides documentation and information needed for internal reviews, audits, and external reporting requirements.

11. Communicates with internal departments and team members to obtain information and resolve routine accounting questions and issues.

12. Monitors assigned accounting activities to help ensure compliance with established controls and procedures.

13. Assists with accounting projects, process improvement initiatives, and special assignments as directed.

14. Maintains organized accounting records and documentation in accordance with record retention requirements.

15. Serves as a resource to less experienced staff by providing guidance on routine accounting procedures and processes.

16. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Associate's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field and 3 or more years of progressively responsible accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, or related financial experience required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Work experience may substitute for degree.

Ability to identify discrepancies or issues and appropriately escalate them to the appropriate team member.

Effective written and verbal communication skills

Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing operational needs

Ability to adapt to changing priorities, processes, and procedures.

Intermediate-level Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to work with formulas, sorting, filtering, and basic data organization.

Proficiency with accounting systems, financial software, and standard Microsoft Office applications.

Ability to follow established accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Demonstrates sound judgment when handling routine accounting issues and knows when to seek guidance for more complex matters.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of financial and organizational information.
