Director of Development

Northfield Mount Hermon( NMH ) seeks a strategic and collaborative Director of Development. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO) as their primary strategic partner, the Director of Development (DOD) functions as the department's operational leader, ensuring management continuity and alignment across all advancement initiatives. The position oversees all direct fundraising units including the NMH Fund, parent giving, major gifts for domestic and international supporters, and legacy giving with responsibility for securing financial success of Northfield Mount Hermon. The position manages a team of staff professionals and will work with many volunteers including Alumni and Family Councils, and others as needed both to accomplish the work and to engage constituents in meaningful ways. The position carries an advancement portfolio of 75+ potential donors to meet institutional goals. A Day in the Life The Director of Development will serve as a strategic partner to the Chief Advancement Officer and a key leader within NMH’s Advancement team. This position will oversee frontline fundraising efforts across annual giving, parent giving, major gifts, and legacy giving while leading a team of advancement professionals and collaborating with a dedicated network of volunteers. In addition to providing strategic leadership for NMH’s comprehensive development program, the Director of Development will cultivate relationships with alumni, parents, and friends through a personal portfolio of major and leadership-level donors. This role will help shape fundraising strategies, strengthen donor engagement, and build systems that support the continued growth of NMH’s philanthropic community. The successful candidate will be an active member of the NMH community, building relationships across campus and developing a deep understanding of the school’s mission, traditions, and culture. Required Skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree required 10+ years of experience leading successful fundraising programs, including experience managing and developing high-performing teams Demonstrated success developing fundraising strategies, cultivating donor relationships, and securing philanthropic support Experience managing and engaging volunteers in support of institutional goals Strong leadership, project management, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build authentic relationships with a wide range of constituents Ability to collaborate effectively across departments while working independently and exercising sound judgment Experience using technology platforms and tools, including Google Workspace or Microsoft Office Demonstrated discretion, tact, and ability to manage confidential information Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community and to NMH’s mission and values Preferred Qualifications Experience in educational fundraising, particularly within an independent school, college, or university setting Advanced degree preferred Experience working within a boarding school or residential educational community Familiarity with CRM systems such as Slate or other advancement databases This is a full-time, on-site position based at NMH’s campus in Gill, Massachusetts.
