LEGAL SECRETARY I (1458) – Citywide City and County of San Francisco – Class 1458 Legal Secretary I Salary: $95,784.00 – $116,402.00 Hours: Full-time Exam type: Class-Based Test Rule: Rule of the List List type: Entrance About San Francisco is a vibrant and dynamic city, on the forefront of economic growth, innovation, urban development, and arts and entertainment. Responsibilities Word processes, edits, and prepares a wide variety of legal documents, including pleadings, briefs, correspondence, subpoenas, contracts, jury instructions, complaints, resolutions, and ordinances. Abstracts information from various sources and converts it into proper legal form. Transcribes legal dictation from dictaphone or longhand notes at a rate of 110 words per minute to prepare legal documents. Opens, maintains, monitors, and closes legal case files and maintains correspondence and record files. Maintains attorney appointment calendars and files legal documents with courts, ensuring timely responses to complaints. Provides information to callers and exercises judgment and discretion with confidential matters. Prioritizes duties and deadlines to accommodate work schedules of multiple attorneys. Performs related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a legal secretary transcribing dictation and typing legal documents, including petitions, motions, briefs, complaints, and other legal forms. Ability to type 55 net words per minute. Ability to transcribe legal matters accurately from a transcribing machine with a no more than 2% error rate (may be required in some departments). Substitution: Certificate of completion in legal secretarial skills from a recognized college, university, or training program, which involves learning legal terminology and formats, may substitute for six (6) months of required experience. Proof of satisfactory completion must be submitted with the application. Selection Procedures Multiple-choice written exam covering legal office practices, procedures, terminology, business English, and operational skills. Required proficiency: operate modern office equipment, transcribe at 55 net words per minute, proofread, solve basic math, and communicate effectively. Passing the exam is required to be placed on the eligible list; subsequent hiring decisions are made by the hiring department.
