INTERMEDIATE TYPIST-CLERK / EMERGENCY APPOINTMENT HOMELESSNESS

Job Summary The Department of Mental Health is seeking candidates for an emergency Intermediate Typist Clerk position related to the homelessness crisis. The role involves clerical duties that require exceptional typing accuracy, critical judgment, and knowledge of legal document handling. Successful candidates may receive an initial appointment of up to 90 days, with the opportunity for permanent County employment following a performance assessment. Essential Job Functions Type abstracts of judgment, executive notices, and similar documents with extreme accuracy. Type complex charts, forms, statistical information, and other documents from rough drafts, arranging tabular material and setting up forms. Process documents according to specialized procedures for property descriptions, court paper recording, transcription, and indexing. Check documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and other requirements. Answer public inquiries and provide information regarding regulations, procedures, and the preparation and filing of legal forms, applications, and permit requests; act as special receptionist or counter clerk. Maintain records that require specialized knowledge and judgment in selecting, compiling, or computing data such as cost records and ledger entries. Maintain clerical controls for work divided among personnel performing separate parts of an operation. Search records and files for data requiring judgment and discrimination in selecting or abstracting material. Answer correspondence requiring the selection of data for replies, referring unusual cases to a superior for approval. Estimate amounts due and collect fees. Exercise minor supervision over the work of others. Compare or segregate documents in cases where specialized knowledge is required, such as auditing warrants or purchase orders. Operate office machines such as calculators incidental to other duties. Access and use office equipment including video display terminals, word processors, and personal computers to input data, perform computations, or produce documents. Requirements Six months of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting in County service or in districts under County jurisdiction, OR one year of full‑time office clerical experience involving typewriting outside County service, OR a certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited college. Typing skill: Ability to type at a rate of 40 net words per minute. Experience or education that demonstrates ability to type complex legal and administrative documents with extreme accuracy. Applicants must meet the minimum requirements at the time of filing. Physical Class Physical Class II – Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort, occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds, and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved. Examination Content Applicants must pass a California Department of Los Angeles approved typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute. Candidates who have previously passed an approved typing test with a County department may be exempt from the test. The initial appointment may be up to 90 days, with a performance assessment weighted 100% for potential permanent appointment.
