Position: HR Generalist

Reports to: Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO)

Location: Brooklyn, NY

Hours/Schedule: Part Time

Salary Range: $33.00/hr - $46.00/hr

Position Summary:

Founded in 1866, Brooklyn Community Services (BCS) empowers children and families to reach their full potential, strengthen families, and foster self-sufficiency in adults. With programs in multiple locations throughout Brooklyn, BCS serves thousands of individuals and families each year.

The HR Generalist provides comprehensive day-to-day Human Resources support to employees and managers across Brooklyn Community Services. The position supports a broad range of HR functions, including employee relations, recruitment and onboarding, performance management, HR operations, employee documentation, compliance, and HR process improvement.

The HR Generalist serves as a resource to employees and people managers and works collaboratively with HR leadership and other members of the Human Resources team to ensure HR processes are timely, consistent, well documented, and responsive to organizational needs.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as a primary point of contact for employees and people managers regarding general HR questions, policies, procedures, and processes.
• Build effective working relationships with managers and employees across BCS programs and departments.
• Provide guidance and support to managers regarding day-to-day employee matters, performance concerns, documentation, and HR procedures.
• Support employee relations matters by gathering information, maintaining appropriate documentation, coordinating follow-up, and escalating complex or sensitive matters to HR leadership as appropriate.
• Assist managers with performance management, coaching, corrective action, performance improvement plans, and related documentation.
• Support recruitment and hiring activities, including coordinating with hiring managers, reviewing staffing needs, scheduling interviews, communicating with candidates, and assisting throughout the hiring process.
• Coordinate pre-employment activities, including background checks, required clearances, employment documentation, and other onboarding requirements.
• Prepare and coordinate offer letters, employment letters, personnel action forms, and other employee documentation.
• Support new-hire onboarding and orientation and coordinate with appropriate departments to ensure employees have the information, systems, equipment, and resources needed to begin employment.
• Process and support employee changes including new hires, transfers, promotions, compensation changes, differentials, leaves, and separations.
• Coordinate employee offboarding and prepare appropriate separation and termination documentation.
• Maintain accurate and confidential employee records and HR documentation.
• Support HRIS data accuracy and work with appropriate HR team members to resolve employee record and system-related issues.
• Support HR compliance activities, including employment eligibility verification, background checks, clearances, required documentation, and internal record reviews.
• Monitor outstanding HR documentation and follow up with employees and managers as necessary.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of HR procedures, templates, checklists, trackers, forms, and other HR resources.
• Document HR processes and support departmental knowledge-transfer and succession efforts.
• Identify opportunities to streamline and improve HR processes, workflows, communication, and service delivery.
• Assist with the implementation and evaluation of HR systems, tools, programs, and departmental initiatives.
• Support employee engagement, retention, organizational change, and employee experience initiatives.
• Assist with manager resources, training initiatives, and HR communications.
• Partner with HR leadership and other members of the HR team on special projects and organizational initiatives.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion when handling employee and organizational information.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Minimum of 3 years of progressive Human Resources experience, preferably in an HR Generalist or similar role.
• Experience supporting employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and general HR operations.
• Working knowledge of federal, New York State, and New York City employment laws and HR best practices.
• Experience working with HRIS, applicant tracking, or other Human Resources systems preferred.
• Experience in nonprofit, social services, human services, or a similarly complex organization is preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to work effectively with employees and managers at all levels of the organization.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential and sensitive employee information.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues, recommend solutions, and appropriately escalate matters.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of the Human Resources team.
• SHRM-CP, PHR, or similar Human Resources certification is a plus.
