Development Officer (Administrator I)

San Diego State University

Position Summary San Diego State University is seeking a relationship-driven Development Officer to help grow philanthropic support for Entrepreneurship Initiatives and priorities across the university. This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging fundraising professional to build experience in major gifts while developing meaningful relationships with alumni, donors, parents, business leaders, and community members. You’ll manage a portfolio of prospective donors, identify and qualify new opportunities, cultivate relationships, and help secure leadership annual and major gifts of $25,000 or more. Approximately half of your fundraising efforts will support Entrepreneurship Initiatives within the Fowler College of Business, with the other half supporting priorities across SDSU. Key Responsibilities Donor Development & Fundraising Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospective donors for leadership annual and major gifts of $25,000 or more. Manage donor relationships through meetings, calls, events, email outreach, and personalized engagement. Conduct discovery conversations to understand donor interests, philanthropic priorities, and giving potential. Move prospects through the donor pipeline and collaborate with development colleagues on cultivation and solicitation strategies. Create meaningful stewardship opportunities that strengthen long-term donor relationships. Entrepreneurship Initiatives Build philanthropic support for Entrepreneurship Initiatives within SDSU’s Fowler College of Business. Engage and steward donors supporting programs such as the ZIP Launchpad, Lavin Entrepreneurship Center, Aztec Cooperative Fund, Seed Fund, San Diego Angel Conference, and Social Venture Challenge. Support the Entrepreneurship Initiatives Advisory Board by cultivating prospective members and strengthening relationships with current members. Partner with faculty, university leaders, alumni, and community members to expand engagement and philanthropic opportunities. Prospect Research & Strategy Research prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors to identify philanthropic potential and areas of interest. Prepare prospect profiles, qualification summaries, and briefing materials to support donor strategy. Use prospect research, wealth screening, and engagement information to identify and prioritize fundraising opportunities. Collaborate with development colleagues on portfolio strategy and prospect planning. Donor Data & Portfolio Management Maintain accurate donor and prospect activity within the university’s constituent relationship management system. Track portfolio activity, contact reports, engagement history, and qualification information. Support reporting and prospect management activities while ensuring development practices align with university and advancement policies. Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. (May occasionally be required to work evenings and/or weekends to attend events or perform duties outside normal work hours. Must also be able to travel to and attend off‑campus appointments and events.) This position is eligible for telecommuting up to 3 days per week, following a training period during which on‑site presence is required. Units of URAD work together to create enduring relationships with alumni, parents, donors, students and the community to generate private support for SDSU students, faculty and a diverse number of programs. Education And Experience Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, in a relevant field or combination of education and experience. Two years of entry‑level development experience. Key Qualifications Ability to articulate a compelling case for annual support of a public institution of higher education. Ability to interact comfortably with university officials and community/business leaders. Ability to interpret biographical, corporate, and foundation information. Ability to attend events during non‑business hours. Ability to thrive in an environment of change. High level of customer service, attention to detail, exceptional follow‑through. Preferred Qualifications: Financial and biographical database experience. Demonstrated experience in working with annual donors. Annual campaign experience. A high degree of interest in and commitment to higher education and philanthropy. Licenses/Certifications Required Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire.
