Registered Nurse - Emergency Department Per Diem Day Shift Flex

POSITION SUMMARY At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supporting the restoration of health and well‑being while adhering to medical regimens. JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients. Develop a written individualized care plan which includes teaching needs and discharge planning. Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed. Administer medication. Practice infection control and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment. Assume responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients, communicating changes in patient condition and questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician. Develop and maintain current written plan of care for assigned patients, set priorities to meet the patient’s needs, and set patient goals and priorities with the patient and/or family. Provide documented evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching, ensuring consistency with physician instructions. Communicate and work effectively with other staff and other departments. Participate in unit or hospital‑based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at SBSH. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association required. Current BLS provider certification from the American Heart Association required. TNCC certification required. NIHSS and moderate sedation required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies. Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning, and physical interventions, if needed. Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, using appropriate safety techniques and equipment. Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care. Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression. Proving physical support in restraining or de‑escalating patients if necessary. Use of medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision. Performing tasks such as documenting patient information, administering injections, or manipulating medical equipment. Maintaining physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends. Managing high‑stress situations with clear decision‑making and physical capacity. Handling emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises. Respond quickly and take rapid action, including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize a patient in a crisis situation. These physical demands are tailored to the nature of the job, requiring a high level of alertness, physical engagement, and responsiveness, especially when dealing with patients in acute psychiatric distress. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree preferred. Under New York State Education Law § 6905 (commonly referred to as the BSN in 10), all Registered Nurses licensed on or after December 19, 2017, must obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree within ten years of their initial RN licensure to maintain their ability to practice in the State of New York. Failure to meet this legal requirement may impact employment status. COMPENSATION Anticipated pay range established based on relevant experience. The starting salary range reflects SBSH’s good‑faith and reasonable estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. PRE‑EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Employee Health Services. Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provide a copy of any required NewYork State license(s)/certificate(s). Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.
