Litigation Associate
Position OverviewWe are seeking a detail-oriented Litigation Associate to join our litigation team. The successful candidate will manage and advance complex civil matters from intake through resolution, supporting trial-ready litigation in federal and state courts. Responsibilities include substantive legal research and writing, motion practice, discovery management, e-discovery and document review, deposition and witness preparation, trial preparation and courtroom support, and client counseling. The role requires strong organizational skills, proficiency with litigation technologies, and the ability to collaborate with partners, associates, and support staff to achieve favorable outcomes for clients. Key Responsibilities
- Manage active litigation matters and maintain organized case files, calendars, and deadlines in accordance with firm protocols.
- Draft and file pleadings, motions, briefs, oppositions, discovery requests and responses, and appellate briefs with attention to persuasive legal writing and citation (Bluebook).
- Conduct thorough legal research and prepare memoranda on substantive and procedural issues using Westlaw, LexisNexis, Bloomberg Law, and other research tools.
- Oversee and participate in all phases of discovery, including drafting discovery plans, propounding and responding to interrogatories, requests for production, and requests for admission.
- Lead and participate in document review and e-discovery workflows using Relativity, Concordance, iManage, and Adobe Acrobat; coordinate with vendors and litigation support when necessary.
- Prepare for and take or defend depositions; prepare witnesses and develop deposition strategies with supervising counsel.
- Prepare trial exhibits, demonstratives and use litigation presentation tools such as TrialDirector and CaseView; provide courtroom support during hearings and trials.
- Draft and argue dispositive motions (e.g., motions for summary judgment, motions to dismiss) and routine motion practice at all stages of litigation.
- Participate in settlement strategy, mediation, arbitration proceedings, and negotiate settlements on behalf of clients when appropriate.
- Handle appellate matters, including preservation of issues for appeal and drafting appellate briefs when required.
- Supervise and mentor junior associates, paralegals and summer clerks on document review, brief drafting and case management tasks.
- Maintain timely and accurate timekeeping, billing, and matter management in Clio or other timekeeping/billing systems.
- Communicate regularly with clients and outside counsel, providing clear status updates and practical legal advice while preserving client relationships and confidences.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the state bar (admission to federal courts preferred).
- 2+ years of civil litigation experience with exposure to trial preparation, motion practice, and discovery (candidates with broader experience will be considered).
- Proven legal research and writing skills with sample brief or writing sample available upon request; strong command of Brief Writing, Legal Drafting and statutory interpretation.
- Experience with depositions, witness preparation, trial advocacy, evidence handling, and courtroom procedures under the Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
- Practical experience in summary judgment, motion to dismiss practice, appellate practice, settlement negotiation, mediation and arbitration.
- Proficiency in document review and e-discovery platforms (Relativity, Concordance), PACER/ECF, LexisNexis, Bloomberg Law, Westlaw, iManage and common litigation support tools.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat; familiarity with TrialDirector, Caseview, Timekeeping/Billing Systems and Clio is a plus.
- Strong organizational, project management and case management skills; ability to prioritize competing deadlines in fast-paced litigation matters.
- Excellent oral advocacy, client-facing communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in team settings.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional ethics, attention to detail, and accuracy in legal work products.
