Payroll Specialist

ARC Leadership Group is seeking to fill an opening for a Payroll Assistant to join the corporate office of our light-industrial staffing company, Connect Staffing, Inc. This entry-level position is a great start to a career in payroll.

Location: Stanton, CA (on-site, corporate office)

Employment type: Full-time, hourly (non-exempt)

Reports to: Payroll Lead

Compensation: $22.00 to $25.00 per hour

Responsibilities

• Administer the electronic time clock system across client sites, including employee enrollment, assignment transfers, and keeping the system clean and current.
• Troubleshoot missed punches, clock exceptions, and timekeeping problems, working with on-site supervisors and recruiters to resolve them.
• Handle complex payroll that does not process cleanly, including multiple shifts, multiple pay rates, overtime and double time, retroactive pay, and corrections.
• Build and run specialty hours-based reporting for internal use and client requests.
• Process the weekly internal payroll for corporate staff.
• Review and import timecard files, and spot check imported data for accuracy before it moves downstream.
• Assist with payroll retros, client requests, recruiter requests, and team member inquiries.
• Keep payroll data clean and complete so the Payroll Lead can close the week on schedule.
• Help document and improve written payroll procedures (SOPs) as the team moves toward clearly defined roles.
• Support the migration to a new time clock platform, including testing, validation, and cleanup.
• Cross-train on and provide backup coverage for adjacent payroll functions.

Minimum Requirements

• Fluent in English and Spanish.
• Comfort working in payroll or timekeeping software and in spreadsheets.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy with high-volume data.
• Ability to calculate hours, overtime, and pay adjustments, and to find and correct errors.
• Clear verbal and email communication with supervisors, employees, and internal team members.
• No experience is required; however, prior experience in roles such as payroll operator, payroll coordinator, administrative assistant, receptionist, or customer service rep is a big plus!

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in payroll processing, timekeeping, or payroll support.
• Experience administering an electronic time clock system (NOVAtime, UKG, Kronos, Time Rack, ADP, Paylocity, or similar).
• Experience with staffing, PEO, or multi-client and multi-site payroll.
• Working knowledge of California overtime rules, including daily overtime, double time, seventh-day rules, and meal premium calculation.
• Experience running payroll across multiple entities or legal employers.
• Experience with retroactive pay, reversals, and off-cycle payments.
• Familiarity with TempWorks or a comparable staffing and payroll platform.
• Intermediate Excel (sorting, filtering, lookups, reconciling data across reports).
• Experience creating, following, or improving written procedures (SOPs).
• Experience supporting a system migration or a payroll automation project.
• Relevant prior titles include Payroll Specialist, Payroll Coordinator, Payroll Administrator, Payroll Clerk, Payroll Operator, Payroll Analyst, Timekeeping Specialist, Time and Attendance Administrator, and Payroll Assistant ready to step up.

Compensation and Benefits

• $22.00 to $25.00 per hour. Full-time, hourly, non-exempt.
• 2 weeks of paid vacation per year, increasing with tenure.
