Paleoclimate/Paleoceanography/Sediment Geochemistry - Assistant Professor Position title: Assistant Professor – Academic Year Salary range: $119,300–$139,100. Minimum pay determined by rank and step: $80,800–$104,700. Off‑scale salaries may be offered to meet competitive conditions. Open date: March 16, 2026 Final date: March 15, 2027 Position description The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego invites applications for a full‑time, 9‑month tenure‑track faculty position at the level of Assistant Professor. The search seeks candidates who integrate marine observations and geology or geochemistry methodologies to address research questions in paleoceanography, paleoclimate, or geological oceanography. A particular interest is in candidates with expertise in the geochemical analysis of marine, terrestrial, or ice core archives to enhance existing programs in oceanography and climate sciences. Applicants should discuss how their work informs physical and/or biogeochemical processes relevant for the modern and future ocean–climate system and how their research will build on world‑class laboratory facilities, marine and sea‑going strengths, and modeling expertise at Scripps, while advancing an equity‑minded and collaborative research environment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous externally funded research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field. They will be required to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Geochemistry, Marine Chemistry, and/or Geoscience at UC San Diego and establish inclusive teaching practices. Candidates with expertise to teach in the Geosciences Major, Oceanic and Atmospheric Science major, and/or graduate courses in sediment geochemistry, marine geology, paleoceanography, and paleoclimate are especially sought. Supervision and mentoring of graduate students and service to the department, university, and broader discipline are also required. Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application) Candidates must possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in oceanography, marine geology, geochemistry, climate science, or a related field at the time of application. Preferred qualifications Preferred candidates will have a competitive record of publication and service, and evidence of ability or strong potential to secure extramural funding and conduct an active research program while contributing to impactful undergraduate and graduate teaching.
