The City of Walker is looking for an organized, customer-focused Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join our Human Resources team. This is more than processing payroll—it's about helping employees navigate benefits, ensuring compliance, improving processes, and making a positive impact on the people who keep our city running every day. What You'll Be Doing As our Payroll & Benefits Specialist, you'll play a key role in ensuring employees receive accurate pay and exceptional support. Your days will include: Payroll Administration Process accurate bi-weekly payroll for 200+ employees. Review payroll data, exception reports, and manual entries to ensure accuracy. Coordinate payroll adjustments related to benefits, taxes, PTO, and timekeeping. Assist with year-end payroll processing and W-2 preparation. Benefits Administration Serve as the go-to resource for employee payroll and benefits questions. Administer medical, dental, vision, life, disability, retirement, HSA, and wellness programs. Manage benefit enrollments, employee changes, transfers, and open enrollment. Coordinate COBRA and FMLA administration with third-party providers. Audit benefit invoices and payroll deductions for accuracy. Maintain payroll files for retirement and benefit reporting. Compliance & Reporting Stay current on payroll regulations, tax laws, ACA reporting, and compliance requirements. Prepare payroll and benefits reports. Maintain confidential employee records with the highest level of integrity. Work closely with Finance, department leaders, and external vendors to ensure seamless payroll and benefits administration. What We're Looking For We're searching for someone who is: Detail-oriented and highly organized Passionate about providing exceptional customer service Comfortable juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment A proactive problem solver who enjoys helping others Professional, ethical, and trusted with confidential information A collaborative teammate who enjoys working across departments Requirements Associate's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance/Accounting, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education, experience, or certification such as CPP). Two to four years of payroll experience processing payroll for 200+ employees. Experience using HRIS, payroll, and timekeeping software. Knowledge of payroll tax regulations, wage garnishments, benefits administration, and employment compliance. Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
