Surgical Physician Assistant - Liver Transplant Team

Position Overview

Gracious Health Medical Hospital is seeking a dedicated and skilled Surgical Physician Assistant to join our esteemed Liver Transplant department. In this full-time, onsite role located in Amarillo, Texas, you will be an integral part of a collaborative medical team providing comprehensive care to patients undergoing liver and abdominal transplant procedures. The position involves both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities, as well as active participation in the operating room.

Work Environment

This role operates within a fast-paced hospital setting, where teamwork and communication are essential. Our Liver Transplant department consists of attending physicians, surgical fellows, and a well-rounded support staff, all working together to ensure optimal outcomes for our patients. The schedule consists of a standard five-day work week with 8-hour shifts from Monday to Friday, with some on-call responsibilities each month to support our patients' needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Evaluate and treat patients presenting with acute and chronic health issues, specifically pertaining to liver and abdominal transplant care.
• Conduct thorough medical histories and physical examinations for both new and returning patients, identifying normal and abnormal clinical findings.
• Order and interpret diagnostic studies as warranted based on patient assessments, ensuring prompt and accurate results.
• Administer medications per hospital protocols and physician approval while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards for controlled substances.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to facilitate the provision of therapy, diagnostic evaluations, and nursing services.
• Perform specialized procedures under the supervision of an attending physician, ensuring demonstrable competency in techniques relevant to transplant surgery.
• Obtain informed consent from patients for surgical procedures and investigational studies following established guidelines.
• Aid in all aspects of patient admissions and discharges, ensuring the completion of necessary paperwork and patient education regarding postoperative care.
• Assist in the operating room, acting as a first or second assistant, and performing surgical tasks under direct supervision.
• Proactively respond to medical emergencies and recognize situations requiring immediate physician intervention, performing life-saving measures as necessary.
• Engage in patient education initiatives to promote healthy lifestyles and adherence to treatment plans.
• Participate in departmental quality improvement projects and contribute to ongoing education and training opportunities.

Patient Population / Client Focus

You will work primarily with patients undergoing liver and abdominal transplants, many of whom present complex medical conditions. This role demands an understanding of the physical and emotional challenges these patients face, with a focus on delivering empathetic and informed care tailored to diverse cultural backgrounds.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution.
• Successful completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc.
• Current Physician Assistant State License.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.

Preferred Experience

• At least one year of direct clinical experience as a Physician Assistant, preferably in surgical or transplant settings.
• Familiarity with EMR systems, particularly those utilized in surgical specialties.
• Experience with inpatient and outpatient care coordination methods.

Compensation and Benefits

The Physician Assistant position offers a competitive salary ranging from USD 140,000 to 180,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
