Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Progressive Care Unit Duration: 16 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years of high acuity PCU experience preferred. License: Valid state nursing license required. Certifications: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required. Must-Have: - High acuity PCU patient experience. - Strong focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention. Description: This position is for a nursing role in a medical oncology progressive care unit. The unit cares for patients with solid tumors and orthopedic and thoracic oncology conditions. Patient care involves telemetry monitoring and requires a high level of acuity. Experience in oncology is preferred, but not required. The scheduled hours will involve self-scheduling requests for preferred shifts. The first week of training is a Monday to Friday daytime orientation. The second week involves 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor. Nurses may be scheduled for day, night, or a combination of shifts depending on departmental needs. Patient-to-nurse ratios are typically 1:4-5 in medical-surgical telemetry. It is expected that the nurse will float within units that are of equivalent or lower acuity. Special skills required include the management of dysrhythmias and rapid response team usage. Additional responsibilities will involve administering blood products and chemotherapy, performing phlebotomy, and managing central and peripheral lines. Experience with special equipment such as telemetry systems and PCA pumps is necessary. There will be a focus on care for high-acuity patients, including the interpretation of arterial blood gases and management of tracheostomies. Pediatric patient care is rare and will mainly be handled by permanent staff. Candidates should possess strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.
