Nursing Station Clerk/NSC Trainee - Full Time Night Shift (11:00 PM - 7:30 AM)

Position Summary Nursing Station Clerks 1 are assigned to either inpatient or outpatient units where there is daily contact with patients. This team member greets visitors and directs them to appropriate locations; answers telephones; performs data entry activities; maintains daily and clinical logs; prepares, updates, and maintains patient charts and files; fills out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions; mails patient letters; and delivers supplies and records to an assigned unit. This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non‑competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non‑competitive employment status converted to competitive status without having to compete in an examination. Duties Orient patients and/or family to unit, providing general information regarding the room, unit and hospital and serving as a contact person to patients and families. Give information on patient condition within existing policies, and direct visitors to the appropriate locations. Process physicians' orders by recording written orders in charts, kardex, flag sheets, or directly into a computer file after review by a Registered Nurse; and by filling out medication tickets and pharmacy requisitions. Receive new admissions. Prepare and maintain patient charts, daily log and clinic log. Qualifications Must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for Nursing Station Clerk 1. If you are on the eligible list you may receive a canvass letter and must complete and return it as instructed. One year of full‑time clerical, secretarial, or patient care experience in a health care setting. Provisional candidates must take the examination for Nursing Station Clerk 1 when it is next offered and must be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55 b/c eligibility letter if applicable. Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive service in a title approved for transfer to Nursing Station Clerk 1. Pre‑employment Requirements Successfully complete a pre‑employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance. Complete an electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references. Successfully complete a 4‑panel drug screen. Meet regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings. Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s). Additional Information This position may require wearing respiratory protection, which may prohibit wearing facial hair. Pay Range The salary range for this position is $36,232 – $38,235 per year. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate’s validated experience.
