LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER - 195 DAY

Language Arts Teacher – 195-Day Position (Full Time, Dumfries, VA) Job Summary: This role plans and implements instructional programs for students, manages classroom behavior, assesses student achievement, modifies instructional activities as needed, and performs various monitoring and control activities. The teacher may work as a general education classroom teacher for single or multiple grades, with potential assignments to science labs or other technology-based labs requiring heightened safety monitoring. Work is performed under the general supervision of the principal or other designated administrator. Essential Responsibilities Assess continuously student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting. Plan and implement instructional and learning strategies and activities, including determining appropriate materials and managing learning time to maximize student achievement using a variety of instructional materials and computer technology. Manage learner behavior in the instructional setting and participate in behavior management for other parts of the school, center, or work site. Coordinate instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non‑school based, to maximize learning opportunities. Work in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or perform off‑school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or instruct field staff. Participate in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned. Foster partnerships and ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student progress. Communicate continually with students on instructional expectations to keep them informed of their progress. Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers. Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant. Support or participate in school‑wide student activities and social events. Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to the appropriate administrator as required. Collaborate with other professionals such as guidance counselors and librarians to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities as needed. Other Duties as Assigned: Work as directed by the school or division to support the overall educational mission. Qualifications for Successful Performance Knowledge of the instructional process, content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment for assigned instructional specialties. Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development. Knowledge of Prince William County curriculum and related assignments, school division mission, goals, and organization. Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs. Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and student needs. Skill in oral and written communication, with excellent human relations skills. For foreign‑language teaching, proficiency in oral and written communications in that language. For choral, instrumental, visual arts, or career‑technical specialties, required proficiencies as described (instrument, piano, portfolio, trade journey, etc.). Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree. Certification: Collegiate professional, postgraduate professional, or appropriate vocational certificate/license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignments; must be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program. Experience: Equivalent to at least the type, area, or field for the assignment. Work Environment: Indoor classroom and standard office settings requiring regular exposure to computers and moderate noise. Monitoring and travel to labs may be required.
