Become a Volunteer Advocate for Seniors (age 18+ Referral) Volunteers learn about national and state laws that ensure the rights of individuals living in long-term care facilities. About the Program The mission of Oregon's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is to protect individual rights, enhance quality of life, improve care, and promote dignity of residents living in Oregon's licensed long-term care facilities. Program staff work with a statewide network of over 180 volunteers who work in their own communities in a variety of roles to achieve this vision and mission. About the Project Every day, residents in nursing homes and assisted living facilities encounter challenges they can’t face alone. Call lights go unanswered, meals arrive cold, or medications are given incorrectly. Some residents feel forgotten. Some have no one to speak up when things go wrong. That’s where you come in. As a volunteer with the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, you’ll visit residents, listen to their concerns, resolve complaints, and advocate for their rights. You don’t need a special degree—just a compassionate heart, a listening ear, and a desire to make a difference. A few hours of your time each week can mean the world to someone who feels invisible. You can help ensure they receive the right care, have the lifestyle they want, and are treated with dignity. Stand up. Speak out. Make their voices heard. Project Requirements Age: Volunteers must be 18+ Time Commitment: We ask for a year commitment at about 4 hours a week. The schedule is flexible to work around your availability.
