Help Upkeep a Garden Oasis in the City! (age 8+) Referral We need help with all sorts of gardening tasks, and there is a range of tasks that are adaptable to fit abilities and desires. If you don't want to weed but really like to deadhead, great! Or if you need a specific set-up to make it possible for you to do a task, we love to provide adaptive strategies. Can't work in the sun? We have both sun and shade options. Because this garden is designed to accommodate different needs, there is a place for everyone. Even if you just want to cheer others on and tell us when we miss a weed, or where the mulch needs to be deeper, we'd love your presence. Tasks can include:

• weeding
• deadheading
• planting
• watering dry spots
• plant/shrub moving or removal
• digging compost and applying compost to raised beds and garden areas
• spreading bark mulch
• cutting and pruning
• collecting yard debris into recycling bags
• cleaning paver cracks
• sweeping and blowing paths
• picking up litter
• special projects, such as applying a fresh coat of paint to metal bench arms, or digging up blackberries
• seasonal tasks, such as autumn leaf pick-up, winter safety checks and fallen limb removal

Volunteers Needed: Regular volunteer party on the first and third Saturday of every month from 9:30-11:30am. We will gladly accommodate requests for other time slots to meet your/your group's needs. Our Mission: "To enhance the lives of individuals with memory disorders and their caregivers by maintaining the Portland Memory Garden, involving the larger community, and providing therapeutic and educational activities." Volunteer participation is a way to involve the larger community, bring awareness about the garden, and volunteers receive therapeutic benefits from being or working in the garden, as well. Whether passive or active, being in the garden enhances health in many ways. Volunteers can learn about gardening methods, tips, and tricks. Many volunteers come and have never been to Portland Memory Garden, so there is much to learn about it and its history. Volunteers can learn about the programming offered in the garden, and may want to attend other events throughout the year while not volunteering. Tools will be provided and we encourage volunteers to dress for the weather. If you have specific tools that work well for your body, feel free to bring them. Bring closed-toe shoes, clothing layers, sun hat, sunglasses, rain gear, water. Please leave valuables at home or lock them in your car! Opportunity Requirements: Volunteers must be 8 years of age or older to participate in this opportunity; any volunteer under age 18 must attend with a parent or adult chaperone.
