Structural Engineer II Job Description

Structural Engineer II designs load-bearing structures or structural elements, such as buildings, bridges, or roadways. Performs analysis of building materials for use in construction. Being a Structural Engineer II develops blueprints or specifications for use during construction and ensures all projects comply with applicable codes and regulations. Determines cause of structural failures, damages, and defects through site investigations. Additionally, Structural Engineer II provides reports detailing investigations and assessment of damages to the structure. Requires a bachelor’s degree. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. To be a Structural Engineer II typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.

Our company is looking for a Structural Engineer II to join our team.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Bridge Design tasks as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
  • Preparation of design calculations for medium and long span bridge replacement projects;
  • Preparation of contract drawings, estimates and specifications;
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures;
  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered;
  • Identifies discrepancies in results;
  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer;
  • Coordination with field personnel for structure mapping and inspection projects;
  • Structural analysis and design utilizing manual calculations, commercially available programs and in-house tools;
  • Review and QA/QC of assigned tasks completed by other engineering and technical staff;
  • Review of jurisdictional and/or local governing agency requirements for structural analysis, design and construction;
  • Communication with clients on design needs and production deadlines, under the direction of a Chief Structural Engineer or associated project lead;
  • Providing CAD support for the preparation of structural design drawings, or assisting other departments within the company;
  • Programming in-house tools for analysis / design, calculation and report automation;
  • Preparation of engineering reports with recommendations for commercial and telecommunications structures.

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of AASHTOWare BrR software;
  • Hands on experience with structural analysis software and CADD;
  • MS degree in Civil or Structural Engineering;
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience on roadway/bridge transportation projects;
  • Proficiency in applicable national standards such as AASHTO;
  • BIM software capabilities;
  • BS degree in Structural or Civil Engineering;
  • Proficiency with CTDOT and/or RIDOT standards, specifications and procedures;
  • BS degree in Structural or Civil Engineering is required;
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies;
  • Proficiency with MassDOT, MBTA and/or RIDOT standards, specifications and procedures.
