This role leads key people processes that support a positive, consistent, and compliant team member experience from hire through separation. The HR Generalist will focus on employee relations, onboarding, performance management, leave coordination, benefits support, and HR compliance. This role reports to the VP of Human Resources and works closely with the Recruiter, HR/Payroll Administrator, Safety Manager, and department leaders. Priority Responsibilities Team Member Relations and Leader Support Serve as a day-to-day HR partner for team members and leaders, providing timely, professional, and consistent guidance. Support leaders with coaching, documentation, corrective action, performance concerns, and team member communication. Conduct and document workplace investigations, escalating sensitive or complex matters to the VP of Human Resources as appropriate. Support the fair and consistent application of company policies, practices, and performance expectations. Build trusted relationships across the organization while maintaining appropriate confidentiality. Onboarding and Team Member Experience Lead the HR onboarding experience from offer acceptance through orientation, ensuring new team members feel welcomed, prepared, and connected. Coordinate new-hire paperwork, required employment documentation, system setup, orientation schedules, and onboarding follow-up. Partner with leaders to support successful introductions, training plans, and check-ins. Support engagement, recognition, retention, and communication initiatives that strengthen the One Team culture. Conduct exit interviews and identify meaningful trends or opportunities for improvement. Performance Management and Development Coordinate the annual performance review process, including timelines, manager communication, documentation, and completion tracking. Support leaders in setting clear expectations, delivering feedback, and addressing performance concerns early. Partner with the VP of Human Resources and department leaders on development plans, succession planning, and training needs. Help maintain clear and consistent documentation related to performance, coaching, and corrective action. Benefits, Leave, and Compliance Partner with the HR/Payroll Administrator to ensure leave dates, payroll impacts, benefit deductions, and return-to-work details are communicated accurately. Serve as a backup partner for benefits administration by supporting open enrollment, responding to general team member benefit questions, and coordinating with vendors as needed. Stay informed on applicable federal, state, and local employment laws and help update policies and practices as needed. Partner with the Recruiter and hiring leaders to support an effective and positive candidate experience. Participate in interviews, offer discussions, background‑check coordination, and pre‑employment processes as needed. Help hiring leaders prepare for new team member starts and ensure smooth handoffs from recruiting to onboarding. Support Responsibilities Maintain accurate information in UKG Ready and other HR systems. Prepare HR reports, metrics, and documentation for leadership as requested. Assist with payroll, benefit, HRIS, and employee‑record questions when needed. Support HR projects, process improvements, automation efforts, audits, and department initiatives. Provide backup coverage for HR team responsibilities during absences or high‑volume periods. Perform other duties as assigned to support the HR department and Walters Recycling & Refuse. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in human resources, Business, or a related field. Three or more years of progressive HR experience, including employee relations and leave or benefits coordination. Experience supporting a frontline, operations‑based, transportation, manufacturing, construction, or similar environment is preferred. Working knowledge of employment laws, HR compliance, and HR best practices. Experience with UKG Ready or a similar HRIS preferred. SHRM‑CP, PHR, or similar HR certification preferred. Strong communication, judgment, organization, confidentiality, and relationship‑building skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities, follow through on commitments, and maintain a calm, professional approach in a fast‑paced environment.
