Executive Director

The Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society (“Society”) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation and is currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill the Executive Director position. The “Society” collects, preserves, and displays documents, records, and memorabilia relating to the Michigan Supreme Court and other courts of Michigan. The position will be filled by January 2027. The Executive Director reports to the Officers and Directors of the Society and serves as the on-site liaison to the Michigan Supreme Court justices and staff. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Administration: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Society, including the development of projections of needs, funding goals and objectives; undertake and oversee all employment actions; maintain membership records; member correspondence; respond to phone and e-mail inquiries; supervisory skills with respect to interns and part-time employees. Serve as primary liaison with governmental entities and related entities; serve as chief spokesperson for the Society and responsible for public relations. Fundraising: Strong interpersonal skills to solicit donors (both personal and corporate) and maintain databases of all donors; apply for grant funding as appropriate. Financial: Oversee Society budgets; prepare yearly budget and maintain accounting system; accept and process donations; pay vendors; prepare and submit regular budget and expenditure reports; work with accounting firm to prepare year-end statements and tax forms. Event Planning: Locate and secure off-site venues; contract review; secure applicable licensing certifications; secure speaker, design and prepare invitations; maintain guestlists; plan, organize, and attend board and committee meetings; maintain board and committee meeting minutes; maintain board roster; develop, plan, and supervise programs; evaluate and recommend policy development/improvement; other projects and events as applicable. Education, Experience, and Compensation: At least three to five (3-5) years’ experience working in a nonprofit or related environment, an interest in law or history, and a complementary field such as communications, fundraising, education, law, or development. Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and enthusiasm are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Windows, and QuickBooks. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
