Cosmetology: Contract Instructor-College Credit Position summary: Assistant Professor of Cosmetology at San Diego City College, a member of the San Diego Community College District. The role involves teaching college‑level lecture and laboratory courses in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, and barbering, and supporting student success and departmental initiatives. Responsibilities Teach college‑level lecture and laboratory courses in a variety of cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, and barbering topics using traditional and alternative methods of instruction. Utilize instructional knowledge and proven methods to support student learning. Advise and assist students in education and career development. Collaborate with department and interdisciplinary faculty to plan, develop, implement, and assess courses that provide technical/professional training and prepare students for certificates, degrees, or transfer to 4‑year institutions. Maintain currency in the cosmetology discipline, industry trends, and technology innovations to develop new courses and curricular revisions that meet transfer requirements, industry objectives, and emerging occupations. Participate in departmental and faculty functions including program review, curriculum development, assessment of student learning outcomes, student advisement, training and evaluation of part‑time faculty, and service on college‑wide committees. Collaborate with industry, community, and professional organizations to meet labor market needs. Serve as an active member of the district and college industry advisory boards. Work effectively with students from a variety of cultural, educational, and occupational backgrounds. Support activities related to the operation of SDCC’s cosmetology labs, including the Client Services and instructional labs. Participate in curriculum development and serve on district and college committees as necessary to improve instructional programs. Participate in co‑curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs to support educational endeavors. Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the SLO assessment cycle. Maintain formal office and campus hours and participate in departmental meetings and community engagement activities to uphold the mission of the college. Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities. Instruct and assist in the success of a diverse student population through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions. Develop and execute culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students. Possess the ability to communicate cooperatively with staff and students. Expand and enhance services offered by the department’s Client Services office. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of relevant experience. Associate degree and six (6) years of relevant experience. California Community College Instructor Credential in Cosmetology & Barbering (valid for life). Equivalent credentials. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and related classroom strategies. Experience working with faculty, staff, and students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and disability backgrounds. Professional experience in a spa, hair salon, barbershop, nail salon, or related institution offering cosmetology, hair, esthetics, and nail technology services. Valid California Cosmetology/Barbering and/or Esthetician License. Valid California teaching credential. At least three (3) years of relevant teaching or work experience in cosmetology in the last five (5) years. Evidence of commitment to remaining current in the discipline of cosmetology and maintaining program excellence. Experience developing college curriculum and using Milady Cengage learning resources. Experience with shared/participatory governance. Experience creating and maintaining professional, community, and industry partnerships, including advisory boards. Experience developing industry contacts, including assessment and placement of students in related jobs. Ability to create a conducive learning environment, manage class time, and provide feedback in the classroom. Proficiency in designing and teaching cosmetology courses in person, hybrid, and online modalities. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with departmental faculty, staff, and administrators. Willingness to participate in departmental and campus activities. Experience supporting students with limited English proficiency and those with prior learning from academic and professional experiences. Knowledge of credit‑for‑prior (CPL) and work‑based learning (WBL) strategies. Equivalency and Credential Evaluation Applicants who do not possess the exact required degrees or who anticipate receiving the required degree prior to the start of teaching classes must submit a Request for Equivalency Form and attachment. Foreign degree holders must have coursework evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) member or an Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute (ACEI) member. The evaluation must be submitted with the online application. Licenses and Credentials Applicants must possess a valid California Cosmetology/Barbering and/or Esthetician License and a California teaching credential. Working Conditions Variable conditions depend on teaching assignment. Work is conducted in classroom, laboratory, and office environments. Employees may be exposed to chemicals and products used in salons, spas, and barbershops.
