Genetic Counselor I - Center for Genomic Medicine - Full-Time, Hybrid

Learn more about the Center of Genomic Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's: The Genetic Counselor I will provide comprehensive genetic counseling services to patients and families in accordance with established professional practice guidelines. Clinical responsibilities are generally centered in an assigned practice area, with flexibility to provide clinical coverage across other practice areas based on departmental and organizational needs. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Genetic Counselors working under a valid Temporary Genetic Counselor License are permitted to perform the following duties only under direct supervision of a Medical Doctor or fully licensed Genetic Counselor: Assesses recurrence risks and recommends medical or genetic testing based upon analysis of risk, benefit and cost. Ensures proper completion of counseling paperwork. Responsible for the communication of both normal and abnormal results and coordinating appropriate follow-up with medical geneticist and/or supervising physician. May provide case management for complex genetic cases, including coordinating medical recommendations, testing, and ongoing counseling. Provides crisis intervention and psychosocial counseling regarding genetic conditions; makes referrals for ongoing care and support. Acts as consultant to referring physicians regarding highly specialized genetic information pertinent to the management of their patients. Responsible for analyzing the intake information and determining if appropriate appointments have been scheduled. Interacts and communicates regularly with the medical geneticist(s) and/or supervising physician(s). Participates in regular staff meetings; works to establish her/himself as a team member, providing coverage for colleagues as necessary. Provides genetic counseling in accordance w/applicable standards of professional care. Attends continuous education courses, attends meetings, and reviews medical literature. Stays current in GC field. Department -Specific Responsibilities: Provides comprehensive genetic counseling services for programs in the Center for Genomic Medicine, as assigned, which may include adult and pediatric patients in general and subspecialty clinics. Qualifications Education, Experience & License/Certification Requirements: Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling preferred. No experience required. Eligible candidates can be new graduates with zero to two (0-2) years experience in genetic counseling, but must have any combination of academic education, professional training or work experience, which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties required for the position. American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification preferred upon hire. ABMG Certified Counselors (prior to 1991 may still be considered). ABGC certification not required if working under a temporary license. Candidates with ABGC certification highly preferred.
