PRINCIPAL ENGINEER (CLASS CODE 4023)

Responsible administrative and professional engineering work in directing the activities of a major division of a large municipal engineering department in the development, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects; and related work as required. Qualifications Registered Professional Engineer licensed to practice in Louisiana. Out‑of‑state registrations are acceptable; however, applicants not licensed in Louisiana must provide proof of registration during the probationary period. No permanent status may be granted until this requirement is met and the probationary period may not exceed one year. Permanent status as a Senior Engineer and at least one year of full‑time experience in that classification; or two years of professional engineering experience gained after registration as a Professional Engineer. Prior to appointment, the hiring agency must verify the applicant’s professional engineer registration and license. Original documents of qualifying credentials must be provided prior to the start date. Education High school diploma, GED, or equivalent from a state Department of Education‑recognized institution, or a college or university diploma earned from an institution accredited by a USDE‑recognized organization. College diplomas from foreign countries may be accepted with a statement of educational equivalency from an accepted evaluation service. Professional Administrative Experience Professional administrative experience is defined as experience gained in a position that required a Bachelor’s Degree upon entrance.
